Briefing Document: University of California Admissions System is Inconsistent and Unfair
California’s Legislature recently tasked us with reviewing the University of California’s admissions process. Our subsequent evaluation not only uncovered inappropriate admissions based on donations and relationships, but also found systemic issues with the admissions system that were unfair to applicants. The following briefing document—a new product we began creating in 2019—unpacks our main conclusions and recommendations using visuals.

The goal of our briefing documents is to make our reports digestible and tangible for decision makers.

We provided this document to legislators, legislative staff, and members of the media in several briefings about our report. What was the impact? In addition to the University working to implement our recommendations, legislators have introduced multiple bills this year to hold the University accountable for a better admissions system. Our report has also generated more than 37,000 unique website hits and was mentioned in articles from The Washington Post, Forbes, Politico, NPR, and many others.
